New research was presented by Dr. Emmanuelle Schindler, M.D., Ph.D., at the American Society Annual Scientific Meeting on psilocybin use for migraine and cluster headaches.
Schlinder and colleagues used data from various patient reports and surveys to design and conduct early proof-of-concept studies using psilocybin to treat migraines and cluster headaches, including a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with patients who experienced at least two migraine attacks per week for up to 65 weeks.
"Compared to a placebo, psilocybin reduced the number of migraines by about 15%,' Schindler said. "Pain was also reduced. There was also a reduction in the functional impairment during migraine attack." Futhermore, psilocybin was only given a single time in this study. According to Schindler, there is no other oral treatment that can do this.
